Born and raised in Alberta, Barbara received a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Alberta and worked at Athabasca University for 25 years as an academic, administrator, and project manager for collaborative initiatives with First Nations Tribal Councils and with a university in Thailand. She served for ten years as a member of the Board of the Canadian Association for Distance Education (now the Canadian Network for Innovative Education), including a term as President, and received an Honourary Lifetime Membership distinction for her work. She also served for a number of years on project selection panels for the Canadian International Development Agency and the Association of Universities and Colleges in Canada. She then moved to England where she was Executive Director and international project consultant at the International Extension College, working in over 20 of the world’s poorest countries. On returning to Canada she eventually settled in Waterloo, where since her retirement in 2006 she has kept busy with volunteer work, for Community Support Connections, as President of the Board of the Social Development Centre Waterloo Region, in support of the Aboriginal Student Centre at WLU, and on a number of committees of the Canadian Federation of University Women, K-W. She has three children, all living in Ontario, two of them academics (Pure Mathematics and International Development and Globalization Studies) and one a professional dancer. Her special joy is her grandson Wolfgang, who lives with his mom and dad in Kitchener
